Description
Part of my “Lidded Lands” exhibition.
Cloudscape across the islands of Herm and Sark, predominantly in the colour blue. Blue is obviously a colour that’s all around us, but the word “blue” wasn’t seen in ancient texts. I loved the idea of almost being blind to the colour blue precisely because it is everywhere. Off the back of this, poet Magnus Buchanan wrote a poem to accompany this piece about the colour blue… without mentioning the word blue to accompany this Herm seascape! See Below:
“Blue” by Magnus Buchanan
only the watcher knows her own name
yet our eyes hold the riddle she speaks
in each eye
a bead of night floats in a pool of sky
and through them we see
the yellow oaths of the sun being born
the blood-red cries of the sun dying
the fold of the raven’s feathers
closing around the land
the ebb and flow of the moon’s milk face
with pockmarked scars
and the scattered ash of stars
yet the bright hush above the treetops
is a watching eye
no name can bind
she rings the lips of tide-licked shells
she dances in the birds’ flickering wings
she rides the bellies of breaking waves
yet the watcher that watches through us
is the hue that hides her name
